Cox’s Bazar city stands on the bank of Bay of Bengal and located at 23.30◦-21.56◦N, 91.50◦-92.23◦E. Ancient name of Cox’s bazar was Bakoli. Mid seventeenth’s name was PENGWA. The Rakhyne work PENGWA means yellow flower. Burmese king Monwaing attacked Cox’s Bazar in 1784. He killed the Arakanese king and took control of the area. The Government of the then East India company appointed Captain Hiram Cox as Superintendent and assigned him to rehabilitate the Arakanees refugees. On arrival there in 1799, he defeated the Burmese king in a battle and rehabilitated the Arakanees refugees. After the war he set up a bazar (Market) in that place which was name as Cox’s Bazar after him.
Golden Sands- miles after miles, over looked by genteel cliffs and awash with forming waves, colorful conch shells, ponderous pagodas, delicious seafood-this is Cox’s Bazar. The seaside tourist township of Bangladesh boasting the worlds longest (120km) unbroken Beach sloping gently down into the blue water of the Bay of Bengal. Cox’s Bazar in one of the most attractive tourist spots of the country.
Cox’s Bazar is renowned for many many tourist spots such as Inani, Patuertek etc. in Ukhiya upazila, lovesome patches of exclusive beaches perched between the sea and hills. Himchari in Ramu a beauty sopts in the solitude of the sea and the hills. Also attractions include ancient Buddist temple and Khyang, Ramkat, Bonoshram, Tirthadham, rubber gardens, Buddist locating red chin Khyang, white chin Khyang, Jhorkhyang in Ramu Upazila. Moheshkhali an island of forested hills with the ancient Adinath temple and a Buddiest vihara. Also a maiden island of Cox’s Bazar as Sonadia is there. Teknaf a romantic old-world border township in the southern tip of Bangladesh territory looking up to the Myanmar hill ranges across the river Naf. Countries only coral island is Saint Martin whose local name is Narikel Jingira. Attraction are beaches around the island-Coral stones Coconut graves, Sea crabs turtle shells and pearls.
Kutubdia Batighar, Submarine Cable landing station, Dulahazra Safari Park, Sea fisheries ghat etc. are the very important place in Cox’s Bazar. Cox’s Bazar has a land port at Kerontoli under Teknaf Upazila. Salt production and shrimp culture are remarkable in Cox’s Bazar. Longest sea beach in the world at Cox’s Bazar is now listed in competition of world new 7 wonder’s selection.
The intercommunication system of the district is enormously developed is last few years decades as a result most of the villages are jeepable except a few exceptions. It is a flash flood and cyclone prone area as result habitants of this district faces the challenges every year. Cox’s Bazar is one of the potential district in Bangladesh in all respect.
To north of Cox’s Bazar is Chittagong and the hill districts of Banderban and Khagrachari to the East is Myanmar, to the West and south is Bay of Bengal.
