Gopalgonj district stands on the bank of the Modhumoti river and located at 23000’47.67” N 89049’2141”E. It is bounded by Faridpur district on the North, Pirojpur and Bagerhat district on the South, Madaripur & Barisal district on the East and Narial district on the West. It was established in the seventeenth century. It is declared as a district in the Ist of February 1984. Earlier it was a sub-division under Faridpur district. It consists of five Upazilas (Sadar, Tungipara, Kotalipara, Kasiani & Muksudpur), four Pourashava/ Municipality (Gopalgonj, Tungipara, Kotalipara & Muksudpur) and sixty eight unions. Gopalgonj District has a strong historical and Political heritage. The Father of the nation and the founder of Bangladesh Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was born in the village of Tungipara in this district. His political life was started from here. The district is the political bastion of Sheikh family. Now his daughter Sheikh Hasina Wajed is the Prime Minister of Bangladesh. In liberation war Freedom fighters of this district was prominent. Hemaet Uddin, leader of Hemaet Bahini also the son of this soil. His gallantry contribution is known to all. More than five police members who took part in first protest at Razarbag police line are also born here. There are some remarkable Institutions exists in the district, these are : Bangabandhu Govt. University and College, Sheikh Fazilatunnesa women’s college, Sheikh Kamal Stadium, Bangabandhu Poverty reduction Training Complex at Kotalipara, Shahid Sheikh Jamal Youth Training Centre at Tungipara, Sheikh Rasel Orphan Child Training and Rehabilitation Centre at Tungipara and Bangabandhu University of Science and Technology (under construction). Gopalgonj is food surplus area of Bangladesh. The main crops are rice, jute and wheat. It has a great roads and water transportation system. As a result most of the villages are jeep able except few exceptions. There are some prominent rivers exist in the district, these are Garai, Modhumoti, Kaliganga, Madaripur Beel route channel, Hunda, Ghagore and Old Kumar river. Besides Borni Baor, Chandar beel and Baghyar beel are notable. So Gopalgonj is one of the Potential district in Bangladesh in all respect.
