Brief Description of the Assignment

(a)     Feasibility study on bamboo plantation & marketing.

(b)     To identify Bamboo backward & forward linkage of value chain.

(c)      To identify the major product line in bamboo products and to assess their unmet market demand and growth potential.

(d)     To identify the commercial potential for Bamboo-based products in Bangladesh.

(e)     To identify the key actors of bamboo market value chain and their role in value addition.

(f)       To identify bamboo growing potential in/outside project area and determine the suitable bamboo varieties/species.

(g)     To recommend the best model and the species of bamboo for production in the project districts considering the various ecological zones.

(h)     To assess the participation of women in the bamboo value chain and identify opportunities to enhance the levels of participation if required.

(i)       To identify the challenges in the value chain of bamboo.

(j)        To develop mechanism for market linkages.

(k)      To find potential project areas where bamboo can be grown profitably and identify the key factors for ensuring the profitability

(l)       To assess the economic and environmental value of bamboo.

(m)    To identify the effects of planting and commercialising bamboo on the local ecology.

(n)     Analyse the ecological impact of the curing and preservation of Bamboo in Haor areas.

(o)     To identify the ecological aspect of bamboo in terms of profit based on climate resilience in Haor areas.

The study should cover 5 (five) project districts of Netrokona, Kishoreganj, Brahmanbaria, Habiganj and Sunamganj that includes 28 project Upazilas.

Experience, Resources & Delivery Capacity Required

Experience: The team leader must have a total of 10 years of experience, out of which at least 5 years’ experience in relevant study, also in the field of value chain and ecological analysis as well as understanding of bamboo production and value addition activities including entrepreneurship development in the livelihood sector with national or international development agency; working with local communities and governmental officials as well as designing studies and research.

Resource: The team leader must have Masters’ or higher degree in a relevant discipline, preferably in Marketing, Economics, Forestry, Social Science, Environmental Science, Agriculture, Engineering and should be strong in computer and communication skills (oral, writing and presentational). The firm should have competent data collector, data analyst, field supervisor and must be financially solvent to carry out the study. The team leader should process skill in developing tools for various studies.

Capacity: The firm must have experience of working with market study, value chain and ecological analysis and capacity to deliver the required results and reports of the study following the Terms of Reference (ToR). In addition, the firm should have staffs and experts with relevant experience who can deliver the services to fulfill the requirements of HILIP/CALIP. Working experience in Haor areas and evidence of undertaking similar assignments and production of quality results will be an advantage. Good track record and reputation of conducting similar assessment for reputed national and international organization.
