Mymensingh is on of the 16 old districts of Bangladesh which was constituted by the British East India company on 1 May 1787. Being more than 220 years old, Mymensingh has a rich cultural and political history.At the beginning Begunbari was chosen as the headquarters of the district. The district headquarters was relocated to Mymensingh when Begunbari devastated by flash flood .Earlier Mymensingh was called nasirabad .Mymensingh is located at 24º 02' 31''-25º 25'56'' North latitude and 89º 34' 00''-91º 15' 35'' East longitude . It is boundered on the north by Meghalaya of India and Garo Hills, on the south by Gazipur district, on the east by Netrakona and Kishoregonj district, south by Gazipur and on the west by districts of Sherpur,Jamalpur and Tangail. The district covers an area of around 4363 sq.km with several small villages between high forests. The city Mymensingh stands on the bank of old Brahmaputra river, as earthquake changed the main flow from Brahmaputra to the Jamuna river which co-side west of the greater Mymensingh region. The distance from Mymensingh to Dhaka is about 120km. The city was linked with Dhaka after the railway lines were connected around 1865. The road link to Dhaka was via Tangail until 1979 and then the half finished highway between Dhaka and Mymensingh via Bhaluka was completed.
Maharaja Surayakanta set up the fist public hospital in Mymensingh along the river Brahmaputra. This is now a leprasy hospital, Mymensingh Medical Collage, one of the oldest and biggest hospitals in Bangladesh is now surving the local people as well as the people of surrounding districts. Thie Golkibari cemetery is the lagest Muslim cemetery of the town, there is another Muslim graveyard at Lakibari named Kalibari Gorosthan. The Hindu Shmoshanghat in Kawatkhali by the side of the Brahmaputra railway bridge and Christian cemetery of the colonial British also present.
Bharat Mihir was the oldest newspaper published in 1875 from Mymensingh in British India . After independence in 1971, Habibur Rahman Shekh published the first daily under the title Dainik Jahan in 1979, following his decade-long trial with weekly Banglar Darpon which had been launched in 1972. He also published a women’s monthly under the title Chandrakash for almost a decade. Mymensingh press Club was established towards the end of 1959 and situated near Ganginarpar is vibrant hub for the intellectuals, teachers, literature and cultural activities in addition to media peoples. The hosts literacy events, cultural functions and such other activities on a regular basis .Poets Musharraf Karim and Farid Ahamed Dulal and writer Iffat Ara are some of the important literacy names from Mymensingh.
An Indian scientist of the last century, Sir Jagadis Chandra Bose was born in Mymensingh on November 1858. The name of Mymensingh is associated with people like anti-British leader Mahadev Sannyal, writer Upendra Kishore Roychowdhury, sukumer Roy and Leela Majumder, musician and a disciple of Rabindranath Tagore Sailaja

Humayun Ahamed who is arguably the most popular Benguli writer, acting president of Bangladesh during the war of liberation Syed Nazrul Islam in adition to other three presidents of the country, namely, Justice Abu Sayed Chowdhury, Ahsanuddin Ahamed Chowdhury, Names of renowned politician and author Abul Monsur Ahamed, the- then Governor of East Pakistan abdul Monem Khan educationist principal Ibrahim khan, President Shahabuddin Ahamed, Language Hero and vetern politician khaleqhe Nawaz Khan, poets Nimalendu Goon, Helal Hafiz ,Singer Mitali Mukharjee, writer Jatin Sarker, Ghulam Rabbani palyed important role for Mymensingh.
